My geranium bloomed strongly, after I applied these extremely simple rules: Now, my flowers are envied by all the neighbors!
Keeping geraniums over the winter is one of the big problems of those who love these flowers – very resistant, by the way. It is known that geraniums
they have some specific needs during the cold season, and if a series of rules are followed, they will „green” again in the spring and will be as rich in flowers as in the previous year.
- The geraniums are kept at a temperature of 10-14°C
At the first sign of a severe cooling of the weather, even if the geraniums are, some of them, still full of flowers, sacrifice their flowers and put the pots in a bright room with temperatures that do not reach 0°C for the straight ones, while in the case of flowing ones, the temperature must not drop below 5°C.
Also, in the room where geraniums are stored, the temperature should not exceed 10-14°C. It should be remembered that the lower temperatures to which the geranium is subjected during the winter favors flowering. Thus, keeping geraniums can be done either in the cellar, or in a well-insulated garage or in a room that is not heated during the winter.
It should be noted that flowing geraniums are more sensitive than straight geraniums and under no circumstances should they be stored in the cellar. This species needs light and a sufficiently ventilated space during the winter.
- Cut the green shoots
Before putting them in the shelter, it is advisable to cut the shoots with or without flowers, as is done in the spring of the vine, counting the spikes and the cords after the buds. Cut the flower branches at 2-4-6 points, no more, depending on the vigor. It is desirable to keep only the strong, woody structure,
because the thin or green branches rot or dry over the winter. While the bushes from which so many varieties of chrysanthemums were selected, give up, the geraniums emit shoots from the sleeping eyes that you leave on the strong branches. You don’t need anything other than the necessary courage to shape the geraniums before the frost catches them, writes mukatidecase.ro.
- Do not change the soil or enrich it with minerals
If necessary, you can do this operation in the spring when you take the geraniums out. The geranium hibernates and that’s why it doesn’t need additional nutrients to feed itself. It is important not to have the opportunity to develop during the winter, because the energy consumed can be felt in the spring when flowering.
- Over the winter, geraniums are watered 1-2 times a month
Do not water the geraniums over the winter except rarely, once or twice a month and not abundantly. It is enough to keep the soil moist enough, but without allowing the water to pool. If the plant is excessively watered, a type of parasite may appear at the root of the plant, causing rotting of the root and stem. The geranium does not withstand temperatures lower than 5°C.
