First meeting at a party in 1999, Penny Lancaster, 51, and Rod Stewart, 77, fell in love after she started photographing him while he was on tour. Penny was pregnant with their first child when Rod proposed to her in 2005.
That November, Alastair, who is now 17 years old, was born. Soon, Rod and Penny wished for a sibling.
But after two years of trying to conceive naturally, the couple made the decision to get medical help.
Penny eventually became pregnant with her second kid in 2010 after three “grueling” rounds of IVF treatment.
But despite her best attempts, she soon received the dismal news that rocked her entire existence.
At the young age of 36, Penny’s sister-in-law Louise received a stage three breast cancer diagnosis.
Louise, who is married to Penny’s brother Oliver, had two malignancies and impacted lymph nodes identified by doctors, who quickly advised a mastectomy.
The news stunned Penny, especially in light of the fact that she had lost her friend Maria Falco to the disease in 2005.
In a 2010 interview, Penny talked about the effect Louise’s illness had on her.

Their joy over the child was even greater because Alastair, who was four at the time, wanted a younger brother or sister so badly.
“Alastair’s cries of ‘Mummy, I really, really, really want a baby!’ kind of kept me on the track to keep going,” the model said.
“I did say that I would stop at 40, that I would realize how fortunate I am that we have Alastair, and that I would put an end to the hunt.
Fortunately, though, our wish came true, and everything is now OK.
Rod also has six children from previous relationships.
His first kid, Sarah Streeter, was born in 1963, and she is now 59 years old. He wed Alana Stewart in 1979, and they had two children together: Kimberly, 43, and Sean, 42.
The model Kelly Emberg and the rock singer later got pregnant in 1987, giving birth to Ruby, who is now 35 years old.
Three years later, Rod got engaged for the second time. New Zealand-born model Rachel Hunter was chosen this time.
They had two kids, Renée, 30, and Liam, 28, respectively.
