HE WAS THE JANITOR OF THE SCHOLL FOR 27 YEARS, AND BECAME THE PRINCIPAL LATER

Gabe Sonnier, had worked for 27 years at the Port Barre Elementary, as a janitor.

And ın 1985, the principal of that time had talked with him and said, “I’d rather see you grading papers than picking them up.”, which changed his life.

On 2008, he had his teaching degree, and started to work as a teacher at Port Barre Elementary, then he received his Masters degree from Arkansas State University.

And after 27 years, in 2013, he became the Principal of the school, where he started to work as the janitor.

He was 39, at that time, and decided to step up, as the principle said.

“I would come to work at like 5 in the morning and leave at 7 and go to school all day and then come back and finish up my eight hours of work here and then go home and do homework,” he said about his past.

“Don’t let your situation that you’re in now define what you’re going to become later,” he advices.

“I always tell them it’s not where you start, it’s how you finish.”
